Special education teachers at Wilburn Elementary  School never work completely alone. Depending on a child's disability and the school setting, special education teachers need to work with speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, occupational therapists, school social workers, general education teachers, and parents/ guardians to plan and implement the best educational strategies for each child.

Special education teachers usually serve as a resource on special education issues to other staff in the school--teachers, administrators, speech-language pathologists, parents, and others. To do all of this effectively, special education teachers need to maintain positive relationships with  administration, other teachers, and specialists.

Special education teachers at Wilburn Elementary work with students who have a wide range of learning, and emotional disablities. With students who have mild or moderate disabilities, we ensure that lessons and teaching strategies are modified to meet the students' individual needs and IEP goals.

Some of the Direct Instruction  programs we use for reading, writing, and math include Letterland, Corrective Reading,  Reasoning and Writing, Language for Learning, Recipe for Reading, Making Connections, and Numberworlds.
